As many of you are aware, the northeast part of Japan was hit by a series of earthquakes. Kyoto is located in western Japan, and thankfully was left unscathed. The schedule for the SMBE2011 Kyoto Conference is unaffected and we would like to assure you that the conference is going ahead as planned.

SMBE 2011 will be held in conjunction with the SESJ (Society of Evolutionary Studies, Japan) annual meeting, to be organized by Kiyokazu Agata (Kyoto University).

Amended Bylaws

This bylaws was passed on January 13, 2011, by the election of the SMBE members with 98% approval. Among the 239 ballots returned, 235 voted for the Bylaws amendments proposed by the council, which led to this Bylaws, and 4 voted to keep the previous Bylaws.

SMBE 2010 Annual Meeting, July 4-10

The 18th annual meeting of the Society for Molecular Biology and Evolution-SMBE 2010-will be held in Lyon, France July 4-8, 2010, in the city’s convention center. The Meeting will highlight the latest research on molecular evolution, especially comparative genomics, population genomics, phylogenomics, and molecular evo-devo.

POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS IN EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY AND RELATED FIELDS

We are now accepting proposals for Postdoctoral Fellowships at The National Evolutionary Synthesis Center (NESCent). We are looking to fund innovative approaches to outstanding problems in evolutionary biology. Proposals are due December 1. CALL FOR PROPOSALS – SABBATICAL SCHOLARS AND COLLABORATIVE WORKING GROUPS

Proposals for Sabbaticals and for collaborative working groups (Working Groups and Catalysis Meetings) are now being accepted at The National Evolutionary Synthesis Center (NESCent). We are looking to fund innovative approaches to outstanding problems in evolutionary biology. In particular, proposals that have a clear interdisciplinary focus, or involve evolutionary concepts in non-traditional disciplines, are strongly encouraged, as are proposals that demonstrate international participation and a mix of senior and emerging researchers, including graduate students. Proposals for Working Groups and Catalysis Meetings are accepted twice a year, with deadlines on June 10 and December 1. Proposals for Sabbaticals may be one semester to a full year (deadlines June 10 and December 1) or they may be for short-term visits (2 weeks to 3 months; deadlines on January 1, April 1, July 1 and September 1).
