Location
of Activities
All activities will take place within walking distance on the main campus (University
Park) of The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State). The campus is located
in the center of State
College, nestled in the Appalachian mountains of central Pennsylvania. Lodging and
restaurants are available on and adjacent to the campus. The welcome reception
will be held in The
Nittany Lion Inn, and all lectures will take place in the Joab Thomas
Building. Posters will
be presented in the Alumni Hall of the nearby Hetzel Union Building (HUB). The
Saturday evening barbecue dinner will take place in and around the new Hintz
Alumni Center, located in the center of campus. See Maps for
directions. Most attendees will not require a rental car and will be able to
walk to and from all meeting activities, the hotel, and restaurants. The distance
between the hotel and meeting site is indicated for a selection of hotels.

Plenary
Presentations
The meeting will open with a keynote plenary presentation by Leroy Hood (President,
Institute for Systems Biology). The Nei lecture (SMBE) will be presented by John
Avise (Research Professor, University of Georgia) and the Key Lecture (AGA) will
be presented by Walter Gehring (Professor, University of Basel).

Symposia
International leaders in genomics and evolution will present invited talks in
nine symposia.
Several additional speakers for each symposium will be selected from among submitted
abstracts. SMBE will sponsor a separate Fitch Symposium that features finalists
of the Fitch
Prize competition and will highlight research conducted by young scientists.

Additional
Oral Presentations
In addition to the invited presentations, there will be a limited number of shorter
oral presentations. Speakers for these sessions have been selected from among
submitted abstracts.

Posters
The spacious Alumni Hall of Penn State's Hetzel Union Building (HUB), a five-minute
walk from the Thomas Building auditoria, has been reserved for posters and
will be open throughout the meeting for poster viewing. The HUB is also a convenient
location for informal discussions near inexpensive dining areas. In addition,
a special session on Friday evening (8:00-11:00 p.m.) has been set aside for
the viewing of posters.

Molecular
Evolution at Penn State
The Pennsylvania State University has been an international focal point for molecular
evolution since 1990, with the establishment of the Institute
of Molecular Evolutionary Genetics (IMEG), directed by Masatoshi Nei.
Members of the institute include twenty-five faculty members from biology and
other departments at Penn State. Many of these faculty members teach undergraduate
and graduate courses in topics related to molecular evolution, and IMEG sponsors
weekly seminars during the academic year. The department of biology graduate
program also offers an Option
in Molecular Evolutionary Biology for doctoral students. Other centers
and programs at Penn State involving research and education in molecular evolution
and genomics include the Huck
Institute for Life Sciences, Graduate
Program in Genetics, and the Penn
State Astrobiology Research Center.
