CALL FOR PROPOSALS - SABBATICAL SCHOLARS AND COLLABORATIVE WORKING GROUPS
Proposals for Sabbaticals and for collaborative working groups (Working Groups and Catalysis Meetings) are now being accepted at The National Evolutionary Synthesis Center (NESCent). We are looking to fund innovative approaches to outstanding problems in evolutionary biology. In particular, proposals that have a clear interdisciplinary focus, or involve evolutionary concepts in non-traditional disciplines, are strongly encouraged, as are proposals that demonstrate international participation and a mix of senior and emerging researchers, including graduate students. Proposals for Working Groups and Catalysis Meetings are accepted twice a year, with deadlines on June 10 and December 1. Proposals for Sabbaticals may be one semester to a full year (deadlines June 10 and December 1) or they may be for short-term visits (2 weeks to 3 months; deadlines on January 1, April 1, July 1 and September 1). For more information, please see our website at https://www.nescent.org/science/proposals.php.

2010 NAS Award in Molecular Biology Seeking Nominations

Members and foreign associates are elected annually in recognition of their distinguished achievements in original research; election is considered one of the highest honors that can be accorded a scientist or engineer. Currently, as many as 72 members and 18 foreign associates may be elected annually.

The NAS Award in Molecular Biology is presented to recognize recent notable discovery in molecular biology by a young scientist who is a citizen of the United States. This award is presented with a prize of $25,000.

An overview of the nomination and election process, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, answers many frequently asked questions about Academy elections.

Previous Meetings

Fourth Biennial Conference on the Developmental Basis of Evolutionary Change
This is a graduate student organized conference designed as a special opportunity for junior members of the scientific community to interact with established members in an intimate environment and to encourage scientific exchange. It will be held October 20-23, 2005 at the University of Chicago, Chicago, Il.

SMBE Young Investigators' Workshop 2005

Genomes and Evolution - June 19-23, 2005
This international meeting will be held at Auckland Convention Center, The Edge (New Zealand), June 19-23, 2005. It will highlight the latest research at the interface of molecular biology and evolution, especially highlighting the work of Allan Wilson. It is the joint annual meeting of the International Society for Molecular Biology and Evolution and the Australasian Genetic Association.

All participants should note that there is a major, and highly popular, sporting event (Rugby) starting on June 25th, which will be attended by >20,000 fans travelling to New Zealand. This would make it difficult to find accommodations in New Zealand AFTER the SMBE conference is over.

Mathematics of Evolution and Phylogeny - June 17-18 and 20-21, 2005
Institut Henri Poincaré, Paris
This conference which follows a similar workshop that was held in June 2003. The subject is evolution, which is considered at different scales: sequences, genes, gene families, organelles, genomes, and species. The focus is on the mathematical and computational tools and concepts, which form an essential basis of evolutionary studies. Recent years have witnessed rapid progress in this area, with models and methods becoming more realistic, powerful, and complex. The goal of the conference is to provide pedagogical presentations of the main subjects in the field, from basic principles to the cutting edge, with time for discussion and debate. There will be presentations by some of the leading experts in the field. Each speaker will survey a broad range of methods, techniques and results. Young scientists will also be selected, to give short talks or present posters.

Genomes and Evolution - June 17-20, 2004
This international meeting will be held in State College, Pennsylvania (USA), on the University Park campus of The Pennsylvania State University, June 17-20, 2004. It will highlight the latest research at the interface of molecular biology and evolution, especially involving the analysis of genomes. It is the joint annual meeting of the Society for Molecular Biology and Evolution (SMBE) and the American Genetic Association (AGA).
