SMBEEverywhere is a series of ten virtual, 1-day Global Symposia which will occur in time zones across the globe starting in July 2022 and running through April 2023. Each GS will consist of plenary talks, contributed talks, and a poster session that span 6 to 7 hrs total (with a break in the middle). Talks will be delivered live with the option to record, and recorded talks and posters will be available in the Gathertown space until June 2023. The Gathertown platform will also allow for real-time interactions during and between each GS throughout the year.

Abstract:
Sexual dimorphism is one of the most conspicuous examples of evolution by natural selection and is observed across numerous phenotypes and species. It is even observed in molecular processes like mutation and recombination that directly shape patterns of genetic variation. However, the heritable components of traits under sex-differential selection stem largely from genetic sequences that are co-inherited between the sexes (e.g., autosomes, X chromosomes). This genetic constraint gives rise to genetic variants with opposing fitness effects in each sex, which can shape genomes over short and long evolutionary timescales (e.g., they can affect the evolution of sex chromosomes), influence population extinction, and maintain genetic variation for fitness and disease. However, despite a decade of genomic-era research, studying sex-differential genetic effects and evolution remains very challenging. This symposium will bring together theoreticians and empiricists to present cutting-edge research and novel approaches aimed at understanding the evolutionary causes and genetic consequences of sex differences
