SMBE has launched Genome Biology and Evolution
(http://www.oxfordjournals.org/our_journals/gbe/) to foster advances in our understanding of evolutionary biology as genome technologies continue to change the way that we can observe and ask questions about the evolutionary process. Much of the progress now emerging in the fields of genome evolution and population genomics has emerged from within SMBE. The launch of GBE takes that vitality and growth into account. GBE provides a forum that is selective both in terms of scope and impact for major advances in evolutionary biology as revealed by genome data. GBE is now accepting submissions (http://www.oxfordjournals.org/our_journals/gbe/for_authors/), the first issue is scheduled to appear in April 2009.

The Roy J. Carver Center for Comparative Genomics and the Department of Biology at the University of Iowa announces an international conference on the evolution of sex & recombination. This conference will immediately precede the 2009 Society for Molecular Biology and Evolution (SMBE) annual meeting, also located in Iowa City, June 3-7, 2009.
The Sex & Recombination meeting was previously scheduled for June, 2008, but was cancelled due to severe flooding in Iowa City. The organizers are pleased to note that a majority of the previously-scheduled attendees have committed to attend this meeting on the rescheduled dates.
Talks will be given by invited speakers at both the junior and senior level. There will also be opportunities for contributed talks and posters to be given by conference attendees at all levels of seniority. A number of travel awards (10-15) will be provided to deserving students and postdocs.
Topics will include:
- Advantages of sexual reproduction
- Experimental evolution of sex
- Estimating recombination rates
- Mating types & sex determination
- Linkage, selection & population size
- Sex chromosomes
- Sex & pathogenesis
- Sexual selection
- Sexual conflict
Sponsorship for this meeting includes generous support from the American Genetic Association. A symposium issue to be published in Journal of Heredity is planned.
Check the conference website for up-to date information on confirmed speakers, details regarding registration, accommodation, etc. All enquiries are encouraged and should be directed to the organizers: sexrec@uiowa.edu
